About the work
Set, metaphorically, over the course of a single night, this ghostly trio investigates a visceral cycle of anger and acceptance. In keeping with the company's goal to create innovative movement and powerful imagery, the evening-length piece is filled with beautifully twisted choreography, striking visuals, and a haunting original score to represent this inner struggle, riding a fine line between fury and insanity. Spanning what is typically an un-seeable journey, the work reflects on the moments we choose to hold in or need to let out, how such feelings affect our physicality and ability to sleep, and how we can become unreasonable without our own knowledge. A Delicate Madness encompasses the fragility of human emotion, our desperate apologies, and learning to trust our own judgment in irrational moments.

BRDP began developing A Delicate Madness in early 2014, after a successful 2013 Season focused on shorter and lighter works. Seeking to dig into a darker subject for our next project, we started working with the seed idea of how we each process our most irrational, angry moments (or attempt to) and began creating a structural timeline of that process.
As we brainstormed the environment that this show would be based in, it felt natural to envelope the stage in the same "mental cobwebs" that take us over in these difficult moments, and I began discussing potential set elements along that theme with designer Beth Svenningsen.

With our small cast of three in place, we spent most of the Spring and Summer in the studio creating the movement vocabulary. It was a difficult task, at times, to construct visuals that could tell the story of a process that mostly takes place inside our own heads. However, working with the composer (my incredibly talented brother, Scott, who I am honored to be working with on another evening-length score) in tandem to the choreography helped to guide our trajectory along.
With a basic outline of the work, split into 7 sections, and lengthy discussions about the overall tone and atmosphere of the piece, Scott set to work creating a rich, moody landscape with his music that beautifully encapsulates our three performers and their journey. We brought the final pieces to the recording studio just a few weeks ago and, after the mixing and mastering process was complete, found ourselves with a gorgeous end product.
After a year of hard work by the incredible artists involved with this production, I hope you'll consider a tax-deductible contribution today to help us put the finishing touches together. Either way, I hope that you will save the date and join us on November 6 - 8 for this elegant new work... I hope to see you there!
All the best,
~Becky Radway, Artistic Director
